3 Illnesses Your Eye Doctor Can Find At Your Next Appointment

Posted on

Even if you don't have any problem seeing, you should get your eyes checked regularly. If you check them on a recommended schedule, your eye doctor can catch any problems before they worsen. The sooner you can catch an issue, the easier it will be to handle that issue. While some problems can't be cured, they can be treated, and earlier treatment means better vision for a longer time. So, what are some things an eye doctor can find?

Presbyopia

As you age, your eyes get worse. The fine muscles in your eyes don't move as well as they used to, making it harder to focus, which means you lose some ability to see up close. That is why people tend to find themselves with trombone arms trying to bring things into focus. Presbyopia is a perfectly natural process that most people will experience. People tend to get bifocals because of this. The more significant part of the lens is a distance focal point, while the smaller part is a near focal point. The near focal point means that your eyes don't have to work as hard to focus on something close up.

Cataracts

Your eye is made up of several parts. One part is the lens. It is a clear covering on your eyes that allows light to help your eye focus. Cataracts are a cloudy distortion that forms on the lenses of your eyes. As cataracts get worse, you start to lose your vision. Cataracts are very common; many people have them as they age. On the plus side of cataracts, they are very treatable. Generally, treatment involves surgery, usually with lasers. The cataracts are cleared off the lenses, and the lenses are reshaped. Many people who have this surgery can see better than they did before they had the cataract surgery.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease that affects the pressure inside your eyes. As the pressure gets higher, more and more damage is caused to your eyes, causing you to lose your vision. Your doctor will check for glaucoma by dilating your eyes, shining a bright light in your eyes, and looking through a special magnifying glass. If you have glaucoma, you must get treatment as soon as possible.

Even if you have perfect vision, you should see your eye doctor regularly. Problems can sneak up on you, and you don't realize how bad they are until you actually get glasses and can see better.
